My goal is to help make the past come alive. When digging into the history of a house or family, you will find wonderful, amazing, and sometimes surprising, stories. If this is your house or family, you become part of those stories. Drawing from various sources, I'll uncover details ranging from mundane to fascinating, making that story more complete and compelling.
My interests and services fall into the following categories:
- House History Research
- Family History Research
- Professional Publishing Services
- Tools and Tech Consulting
House History Research
My initial profession was as an architect. A love for architecture, history, and genealogy has resulted in my spending time researching the histories of houses and the lives of the people who lived there. This typically results in uncovering interesting events about the street, neighborhood, and community, in order to develop a complete picture. It can be fascinating to learn about the lives of the families and may answer questions you've had about your house and neighborhood.
Family History Research
With more than 45 years of genealogical research experience, I've explored many libraries and databases, and travelled many dead ends and rabbit holes. In order to locate the right information, you often have to differentiate between similar names which end up in completely different places. While this may feel like a waste of time, it's important to cast a wide net to be sure that your understanding of things is correct; it's all part of the process. If you're tired of running into walls and feel like it might be helpful to have some fresh eyes on your research, I'm happy to help.
Professional Publishing Services
In my 35+ years in high tech, I've worked for many large companies to assist in improving their efficiency and efficacy in the authoring of complex documentation, for publication as both online and print deliverables (yes, real books too).
I hope to offer those skills and knowledge to the genealogical and historical communities. Many of the authoring tools (Word, Pages, etc.) available today are fine for creating a letter or perhaps a short booklet, but fall short in their ability to create a "proper" book. You can spend an inordinate amount of time managing and applying formatting, then wind up doing it all over again when you realize it's not quite right.
My plan is to bring a level of "professional publishing" to the individual author or researcher. This includes being able to publish online as a website or perhaps an e-book (EPUB), as well as publishing to a PDF that can be used for creating a print book.
Tools and Tech Consulting
If you've run into a problem with a computer file or program that's not acting as you expect, I may be able to help. I can make complex subjects understandable so you can move on to complete your tasks. I can also convert files of one type into another, or clean up HTML that has become a mess. I can convert a spreadsheet into a linear document, or vice versa.
And best of all, you only pay if I solve your problem, so feel free to get in touch to see what I can offer.
